So Miles has been all over the war between Brew Dog and Schorschbräu over which brewery makes the world’s strongest beer. Well, another brewery has decided to enter the ring. Het Koelschip from the Netherlands now holds the title with a beer called Obilix. From Het Koelschip’s website:

I could not have put it better myself. We’ll have to wait and see whether Brew Dog and Schorschbräu respond to such scathing accusations. Or whatever the hell they said about their 45% ABV brew.

Earlier this week I told you all about BrewDog’s new release: Sink the Bismarck! In the few days since then, it has caused quite the internet media stir, primarily on beer websites and from bloggers like us. Many have viewed BrewDog’s video for Sink! as a little over the top and even offensive. Though this may be the case (they refer to the German Brewers as “sausage munchers”), the whole video is pretty tongue-in-cheek. If you are concerned about the video, there is a statement from BrewDog over at BeerAdvocate.

Schorschbrau also riled us for 2 reasons. When we launched Penguin they tried to steal the show with a beer which they may launch, someday somewhere in the future. We had a beer on the market and they had something they were going to make. Secondly they contacted us and tried to sell (yes sell!) us their secrets of brewing high ABV beers. Consequently we wanted to playfully poke a bit of fun at them.

Well, not only does Schorschbräu believe that the alcohol in the beer is not actually “beer alcohol,” but they also plan on ramping things up and releasing a 45% ABV brew soon.

[George Tscheuschner, Head Brewer] has supposed that the Scots would have kept the beer in whiskey barrels and it was therefore also included whiskey alcohol, he told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa in Nuremberg. He was just about to prove it. “I wish there to be fair competition,” said Tscheuschner. He himself would soon bring out a beer with 45% by volume of alcohol.

Regardless of how this all turns out, I hope the competition remains friendly and playful, because come on, we are only talking about beer here, and the only beer to get upset about is spilled beer.
