Germany Produces Worlds Strongest Beer, Again

May 20th, 2010

The German Brewery Schorschbräu has once again retaken the title of World’s Strongest Beer! Schorschbock 43% Vol., the recent release from Franconia come in at a hefty 43.38% ABV, giving it just a bit more punch than Brewdog’s Sink the Bismark!

“In our graciousness, We had decided, not to begrudge the Others, the little joy of holding the title for a few weeks. Let’s not overdo this – from now on, the World’s Strongest Beer lives again where it belongs: in Franconia! Schorschbock 43% Vol., ’cause Frankonian Men don’t dress like girls.”

There has been some recent drama on the issue,

Even more interesting than this latest development is the controversy around the validity of Sink the Bismarck! being 41% ABV in the first place. A Germany-based RateBeer user started a thread yesterday quoting a German TV report that a Berlin lab tested had tested Sink! at only 29% ABV.

German brewers were quick to the defense of the scottish,

“These Scottish guys are professional brewers and there must be a mistake in lab or maybe a few bottles got a sip of water through filling station. My opinion: let’s wait for further tests and give them a chance to find out what happened.”

Regardless, the beer over there keeps getting stronger, but the real question remains: is it any good?

Strongest Beer Contest Heats Up

February 19th, 2010

Earlier this week I told you all about BrewDog’s new release: Sink the Bismarck! In the few days since then, it has caused quite the internet media stir, primarily on beer websites and from bloggers like us. Many have viewed BrewDog’s video for Sink! as a little over the top and even offensive. Though this may be the case (they refer to the German Brewers as “sausage munchers”), the whole video is pretty tongue-in-cheek. If you are concerned about the video, there is a statement from BrewDog over at BeerAdvocate.

Schorschbrau also riled us for 2 reasons. When we launched Penguin they tried to steal the show with a beer which they may launch, someday somewhere in the future. We had a beer on the market and they had something they were going to make. Secondly they contacted us and tried to sell (yes sell!) us their secrets of brewing high ABV beers. Consequently we wanted to playfully poke a bit of fun at them.

Well, not only does Schorschbräu believe that the alcohol in the beer is not actually “beer alcohol,” but they also plan on ramping things up and releasing a 45% ABV brew soon.

[George Tscheuschner, Head Brewer] has supposed that the Scots would have kept the beer in whiskey barrels and it was therefore also included whiskey alcohol, he told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa in Nuremberg. He was just about to prove it. “I wish there to be fair competition,” said Tscheuschner. He himself would soon bring out a beer with 45% by volume of alcohol.

Regardless of how this all turns out, I hope the competition remains friendly and playful, because come on, we are only talking about beer here, and the only beer to get upset about is spilled beer.

The New Strongest Beer in the World

January 31st, 2010

While all the big macro-brewers are working on making the lightest beer possible, the small microbreweries, especially in Europe, are working on making the strongest beer possible.  A few months ago Brewdog out of Scotland released their Tactical Nuclear Penguin, but now a new brewery in Germany has topped them.  Schorschbraeu Brewery recently released their Schorsch Bock 16, which is a whopping 40% ABV, putting it in the range of some of the top liquors like whiskey, vodka, and rum.

Available in 0.33 liter ceramic bottles, personally signed and hand-numbered by the Braumeister himself. Each bottle is sealed with wax by hand and comes in a wooden case with a transparent window on one side.
