Adventures Taylored to Craft Beer Drinkers

July 25th, 2010

A new company has recently started operating in Montana: Taylored Adventures. I have often though of setting up some sort of Montana Craft Beer tour, but it looks like someone beat me to the punch. Taylored Adventures offers three unique tours around different areas of Montana (and a short jaunt into Wyoming). The tours focus on seeing the great outdoors, one includes a bike down the Beartooth Highway, as well as experiencing all the great Craft Beers brewers around the state have to offer.

Mike Taylor [the proprietor of Taylored Adventures] has been organizing college activities and tours for over twenty years at the State University of New York, University of Hawaii, University of Oregon and Northwest College in Wyoming.

His trip leadership experience includes: New York City/New England Tours, Hawaii Adventure Travel, Montana Ski Tours, Australia and the Cook Islands and more! He has also taught outdoor lifetime activities and sports including, Golf, Alpine, Telemark and Nordic Skiing, Snowboarding, Backpacking, Mountain Biking and Bicycle Touring. His interests include outdoor sports, photography, golf, travel, homebuilding, and beer tasting!

Although the tours are a bit out of my price range (they cost about $1400.00), they could be a great activity for when your beer loving extended family comes to visit. What better way to see Montana than with a few great Craft Brews in you!

Beer Heads to Landfill

March 2nd, 2010

As much as I don’t like Budweiser, I can’t endorse spilled beer, or beer being thrown away. Early this morning, a tractor-trailer full of Budweiser jackknifed and spilled its load on the side of the road.

Investigators said the driver was northbound on Highway 15 when he ran off the right side of the roadway and overcorrected, causing the big rig to jackknife.

The load of Budweiser then shifted, causing the tractor-trailer to overturn and slide off the right edge of the road.

The worst part it all the beer was loaded into a giant dumpster and taken to the landfill courtesy of health department orders. Too bad I don’t live near Scotland County, Missouri, or I would be engaged in some serious dumpster diving.

Alaska Produces Best Beer Drinker

March 2nd, 2010

The results are in folks. Wynkoop Brewing Company has crowned a new Beer Drinker of the Year. Congratulations to Bill Howell of Sterling, Alaska. The retired Navy officer is currently a college administrator and in 2007 designed a class called “The Art and History of Brewing.” After being weighed in and hours of judging and challenges including “beer whispering” and “the bribing of the judges,” Bill was chosen as the new Beer Drinker of the year.

Beer whispering is more akin to a poetry reading than a real tasting of beer.  The candidates were told to bring a beer and describe what the beer “whispers” to them.

This event sounds awesome regardless of whether you are a competitor or not. Perhaps some day one of the BarBEERians will make it down there as a competitor, maybe even be crowned as Beer Drinker of the Year!

Weed Brewery Receives Marketing Award

March 2nd, 2010

I know this post is a little out of the normal, but I found it greatly amusing. The Mt. Shasta Brewing Company has recently received an award for its exceptional marketing success. The United States Commerce Association gave it a Best of Local Business Award, which from the small amount of research I did, means absolutely nothing and is just a scheme to sell plaques. Anyway there was a small article on it through which I discovered they print “Try Legal Weed” on their bottle caps. A simply genius marketing device. I love it. Said bottle caps caused some controversy over the last year, but eventually won out against the feds. If there are any readers around Weed, California, I think a “Try Legal Weed” growler would look great next to my “Bongwater Growler.”

Whole Foods Cranbrook is now Selling Growlers

March 1st, 2010

Alright, this one is for all of our Michigan readers, well maybe only those in Ann Arbor. Whole Foods Cranbrook is now selling and filling growlers! They seem a little pricey to get filled, but that is compared to the rates here. I have no idea what it costs to fill growlers in Michigan, any help? Oh, they also currently have Bell’s Batch 9,000 Ale on tap. To top it off, you can enjoy a delicious pint while you do your grocery shopping!

Whats on Tap at Facebook

February 28th, 2010

Keg Presence is a Facebook application dedicated solely to the office keg. It does a lot of cool and crazy things, such as notify employees of what is on tap at the office. It also takes pictures of employees pouring their beer and automatically updates their Facebook status. The application has been around for almost a year, and a necessary addition to any office, assuming you already have a keg.

It’s Not Hard to Sell Beer, if You’re the Only Option

January 28th, 2010

The poor fans at this year’s World Cup will have no choice but to enjoy(?) Budweiser: The Great American Lager while watching the games at the stadiums. Those at the fan parks, however, will be treated to some no-name brand beer as Anheuser-Busch is not sure they can meet demand outside of game stadiums.

Budweiser has decided not to supply its product to fan parks and fests, but is confident of meeting the demand for its brand at the stadiums, where it will be the only beer sold in terms of its position as an official sponsor of the tournament.

The World Cup used to sound fun, but I would rather watch it at home with a nice pint of real beer, than to have to drink pint after pint of imported (read:expensive) Bud. Two thumbs down to FIFA for ever thinking it was a good idea to showcase Budweiser as the beer of soccer fans, but I’m sure FIFA got a healthy check for it.

Green Breweries Abound

January 8th, 2010

More and more breweries these days are going green. New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins, CO is at the forefront of green brewing, utilizing solar and wind power, treating their own waste water, and donating 1% of revenue to environmental non profits. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in Chico, CA is also utilizing solar energy, treating their own water, recycling everything possible, and working on reducing emissions until they are generating 100% of their power. Head north to Hood River, OR and you will find Full Sail Brewing Company working on green initiatives, including a 4 day work week!

Montana Microbrew Documentary

August 29th, 2009

A professor at Montana State University is heading a documentary team working on a film about microbrewery culture in Montana.

The team wanted to find out what it is about Montana that makes people receptive to its breweries, said Bone, 25, a senior marketing and graphic design major from Butte.

The team hopes the film will go on your to festivals around the region.  They plan on finishing the project by the end of the summer and say they will be sending a copy out to each of the featured breweries. Hopefully they get on board and promote an afternoon showing of the film for their patrons! (For more)
