Earlier this week, I wrote about BrewDog’s Tactical Nuclear Penguin, the strongest beer in the world. Today, another one of BrewDog’s beers is making headlines, for similar reasons.
A beer with 18.2% alcohol content has been banned from sale in the UK after a watchdog said it promoted binge drinking.
The controversial Tokyo* beer was launched in the summer but has been heavily criticised for its marketing message.
The drink is brewed by an Aberdeen-based company called BrewDog and contains six units of alcohol per 330ml, making it the strongest in the UK.
The label on the bottles states: “Everything in moderation, including moderation itself. What logically follows is that you must, from time, have excess. This beer is for those times.”
So, instead of knocking BrewDog’s monsterous creation, Tactical Nuclear Penguin, The Portman Group, the watchdog, attacks a beer that’s 18.2% ABV and has a label that references the absurdity of the beer itself? Seems a little strict to me, especially since it has been banned from sale. If you can find someone who can stomach five or six pints of what I assume is tar in a bottle, I will stop drinking all together. But until then, don’t tell me there are people who will read the label and will take on the fictitious challenge the phrasing sets forth. I’m all in favor of responsible drinking, but if you’re looking to do some binge drinking, I assume there are some cheap bottles of vodka over in the UK, or some equivalent of Natty Light, that will fit those needs more than an expensive, meaty beer.
