BVotW: Squirrel Beer (Beer in Squirrels)

September 10th, 2010

For this week’s Beer Video of the Week, we take a brief look back at a post Miles did a few weeks back about BrewDog’s End of History beer. It’s a 50% ABV beer that is sold in a dead squirrel. Yes, dead squirrels and beer: the combination of the year. Check out the video below and see why BrewDog still makes the best beer-related videos on the Internets. (Slightly NSFW, so be careful, late Friday workers.)

Hope everyone out in Montana has a great time at the Montana Brewers Festival, and that everyone else in D.C. finds some great beer this weekend. As for me, I will be hoping Michigan can pull off a great win versus Notre Dame this weekend. Dogfish Head Bitches Brew goes well with the sound of Irish people crying, right? Have a good weekend, everyone. Cheers.

BrewDog Considering a Beer that Will Ruin Christmas for Children All Around the World

August 6th, 2010

From the brewery that brings you beer in a dead squirrel comes a new Christmas beer. Maybe.

Dog is for life, not just for Christmas. Or is it? http://www.twitpic.com/2c1x72 Playing with a Christmas beer concept. Good or bad idea?

But I bet it would taste pretty damn good, though. We’ll keep you updated.

End of History leads Dutch to Start the Future

August 1st, 2010

End of History

Some of you may have heard the news last week that BrewDog, the zany, post-modern, punk brewery out of Scotland, released their highest ABV beer to date. The “End of History” clocks in at a hefty 55% ABV. Only twelve bottles were made, with eleven of them going up for sale for a staggering $760 a piece. But hey, thats a small price to pay for a twelve ounce bottle of beer packaged in a taxadermied squirrel or stoat. I mean eleven lucky red-necks would probably pay just for such a classy “brown-bag.”

The combination of epic beer and epic stunt held the world record for “World’s Strongest Beer” for roughly, well, one week. Yesterday Dutch brewers ‘t Koelschip (the refrigerated ship) released their 60% ABV brew; “Start the Future.” Although the alcohol is up there, the difference in cost is the astonishing part. Start the future is available for 35 Euros, less than 10% of the cost of a bottle of the “End of History.” A few short months ago, I thought it was a race to 50% ABV, now I’m not sure it will ever end, well at least not for a while

Germany Produces Worlds Strongest Beer, Again

May 20th, 2010

The German Brewery Schorschbräu has once again retaken the title of World’s Strongest Beer! Schorschbock 43% Vol., the recent release from Franconia come in at a hefty 43.38% ABV, giving it just a bit more punch than Brewdog’s Sink the Bismark!

“In our graciousness, We had decided, not to begrudge the Others, the little joy of holding the title for a few weeks. Let’s not overdo this – from now on, the World’s Strongest Beer lives again where it belongs: in Franconia! Schorschbock 43% Vol., ’cause Frankonian Men don’t dress like girls.”

There has been some recent drama on the issue,

Even more interesting than this latest development is the controversy around the validity of Sink the Bismarck! being 41% ABV in the first place. A Germany-based RateBeer user started a thread yesterday quoting a German TV report that a Berlin lab tested had tested Sink! at only 29% ABV.

German brewers were quick to the defense of the scottish,

“These Scottish guys are professional brewers and there must be a mistake in lab or maybe a few bottles got a sip of water through filling station. My opinion: let’s wait for further tests and give them a chance to find out what happened.”

Regardless, the beer over there keeps getting stronger, but the real question remains: is it any good?

Strongest Beer Contest Heats Up

February 19th, 2010

Earlier this week I told you all about BrewDog’s new release: Sink the Bismarck! In the few days since then, it has caused quite the internet media stir, primarily on beer websites and from bloggers like us. Many have viewed BrewDog’s video for Sink! as a little over the top and even offensive. Though this may be the case (they refer to the German Brewers as “sausage munchers”), the whole video is pretty tongue-in-cheek. If you are concerned about the video, there is a statement from BrewDog over at BeerAdvocate.

Schorschbrau also riled us for 2 reasons. When we launched Penguin they tried to steal the show with a beer which they may launch, someday somewhere in the future. We had a beer on the market and they had something they were going to make. Secondly they contacted us and tried to sell (yes sell!) us their secrets of brewing high ABV beers. Consequently we wanted to playfully poke a bit of fun at them.

Well, not only does Schorschbräu believe that the alcohol in the beer is not actually “beer alcohol,” but they also plan on ramping things up and releasing a 45% ABV brew soon.

[George Tscheuschner, Head Brewer] has supposed that the Scots would have kept the beer in whiskey barrels and it was therefore also included whiskey alcohol, he told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa in Nuremberg. He was just about to prove it. “I wish there to be fair competition,” said Tscheuschner. He himself would soon bring out a beer with 45% by volume of alcohol.

Regardless of how this all turns out, I hope the competition remains friendly and playful, because come on, we are only talking about beer here, and the only beer to get upset about is spilled beer.

BrewDog Reclaims the Strongest Beer Title

February 16th, 2010

Two short weeks ago, I posted about Schorschbraeu Brewery‘s 40% ABV brew, that was then the strongest in the world. Over at BrewDog in Scotland, their Sink the Bismarck! quadruple IPA (41% ABV) just retook the title (they used to have it with their 32% ABV Tactical Nuclear Penguin). BrewDog, anticipating government criticism, already released a statement emphasizing the importance of enjoying beer responsibly and treating Sink the Bismarck! like a fine spirit.

It is important that you be careful with this beer and show it the same amount of sceptical, tentative respect you would show an international chess superstar, clown or gypsy. -James Watt, Managing Director of BrewDog

Brewdog to Sponsor University Brew

December 20th, 2009

_46956132_1412bottleThe boys at Brewdog have been all over the microbrew news lately with their Tactical Nuclear Penguin to the banned Tokyo beer. And they are at it again. This time brewing a beer for sale exclusively around Wrexham University in Wales. In a recent contest at the university students were challenged to design a marketing campaign for a new beer. The entrants had to record their sales pitch on DVD and send it to be judged by the founder of Brewdog.

“We wanted our brand to feel Welsh, have strong associations with the university, and have a catchy name which people could remember to ask for when they’d had a few,” explained Phillip Chan, part of the winning ’1412′ team.

“We came up with 1412, because it is the date of the last known sighting of Owain Glyndwr , and also because Kronenbourg have had such success with branding themselves as ’1664′.”

The winners will have their beer brewed by Brewdog and distributed for sale around the Univeristy. If the brew is well received, it may even have a limited run in brewpubs in the Wrexham area. Check out the full story from the BBC here.

BrewDog’s Beer Banned in the UK

December 3rd, 2009

bottless

Earlier this week, I wrote about BrewDog’s Tactical Nuclear Penguin, the strongest beer in the world. Today, another one of BrewDog’s beers is making headlines, for similar reasons.

A beer with 18.2% alcohol content has been banned from sale in the UK after a watchdog said it promoted binge drinking.

The controversial Tokyo* beer was launched in the summer but has been heavily criticised for its marketing message.

The drink is brewed by an Aberdeen-based company called BrewDog and contains six units of alcohol per 330ml, making it the strongest in the UK.

The label on the bottles states: “Everything in moderation, including moderation itself. What logically follows is that you must, from time, have excess. This beer is for those times.”

Martin&JamesSo, instead of knocking BrewDog’s monsterous creation, Tactical Nuclear Penguin, The Portman Group, the watchdog, attacks a beer that’s 18.2% ABV and has a label that references the absurdity of the beer itself? Seems a little strict to me, especially since it has been banned from sale. If you can find someone who can stomach five or six pints of what I assume is tar in a bottle, I will stop drinking all together. But until then, don’t tell me there are people who will read the label and will take on the fictitious challenge the phrasing sets forth. I’m all in favor of responsible drinking, but if you’re looking to do some binge drinking, I assume there are some cheap bottles of vodka over in the UK, or some equivalent of Natty Light, that will fit those needs more than an expensive, meaty beer.

Trend Watch: Not So Fast, My Friend…

December 1st, 2009

Nuclear Penguin

In accordance with the true college football sage that is Lee Corso, I’m going to have to pull a, “Not so fast, my friend,” on my previous post. Yesterday, I spoke of Sam Adams’s Utopias, the purported world’s strongest beer. Well, turns out I was wrong. There’s something stronger, and clearly much more badass.

BrewDog is at it again, this time with what it claims is the world’s strongest beer, Tactical Nuclear Penguin. The new record-holder is a 32%-ABV beer that began life as an imperial stout, was aged in two different sets of whiskey barrels, and was then frozen at -20 degrees Celsius. brewdogThe result is an alcoholic potion that, says the brewery, has displaced a 31%-ABV German beer as the world’s most dangerous brew. It’s open to interpretation, of course, whether or not Tactical Nuclear Penguin even qualifies as beer anymore.

So there you have it. I was wrong. This Tactical Nuclear Penguin is made by BrewDog, a brewery in Scotland, and if you thought finding Utopias was going to be hard, try finding some of this. The bottles look great though, and this clearly wins the award for the best name of a beer I’ve seen.

Check out the wonderful video below to learn a bit more about Tactical Nuclear Penguin and the brewing process. Creating the beer took a year-and-a-half of aging plus six days of a unique freezing process. Plus, there’s a Chocolate Labrador in a penguin costume. Can’t go wrong with that. These BrewDog lads are some guys that get a BarBEERians stamp of approval.
