They Tried to Make Me Go to Rehab…

February 28th, 2010

Zhora, a beer-guzzling chain-smoking, chimpanzee from Russia is entering rehab. Formerly a circus performer, the chimp which is currently held at a zoo is Rostov has apparently started harassing zoo-goers for their beers!

According to reports, Zhora’s drinking has gotten so out-of-hand, he has resorted to begging for alcohol. Nobody really knows why the chimp started drinking and smoking. Officials say he started hitting the bottle as soon as he arrived at a zoo in Rostov. Some say Zhora likely picked  up his love for booze and cigarettes sometime during his performance career.

Aside from his drunken romps, Zhora became popular with the ladies. After arriving at the zoo, the chimp fathered several baby chimps.

What can we all learn from this? Not only are you not supposed to feed the animals, you should give them booze or nicotine either. Also, having a bad ass image is apparently as  sexy for apes as it is for humans.

Whats on Tap at Facebook

February 28th, 2010

Keg Presence is a Facebook application dedicated solely to the office keg. It does a lot of cool and crazy things, such as notify employees of what is on tap at the office. It also takes pictures of employees pouring their beer and automatically updates their Facebook status. The application has been around for almost a year, and a necessary addition to any office, assuming you already have a keg.

BVotW: Black Bear Chills in Cooler

February 26th, 2010

This week our BVotW takes a look at some old news. About four months ago in Hayward, Wisconson, a black bear went into the local market and took a stroll back to the beer cooler to check it out. Although there is no actually video, which is a little disappointing, there are a few pictures of said bear.

The Glamour of Glassware

February 24th, 2010

Samuel Adams has paired with Riedel glassware to produce this custom-designed glass to enhance the experience of Utopias.

There has been a lot of buzz lately about how the proper glassware can enhance the experience of enjoying a beer. The right glass, or even any glass instead of a bottle or can, will completely change the experience of drinking a craft brew. I haven’t ever really done a glass by bottle by can comparison, but when I do, expect to hear about it. The proper glass can be very important, even to the point where Sam Adams teamed up with Riedel to create the perfect glass for enjoying their high octane Utopias.

Choosing the proper glass for your beer can be difficult though. I often have no idea what sort of glass I should be drinking my beer from, typically leaving that up to people who brew the beer or simply resorting to the standard pint glass at home. Today however, I stumbled on an article for those of us who need a little help in the science of glassware and how to best us it to enhance our drinking experience.

A Lesson in Beer: Glassware

It’s Not Hard to Sell Beer, if You’re the Only Option

January 28th, 2010

The poor fans at this year’s World Cup will have no choice but to enjoy(?) Budweiser: The Great American Lager while watching the games at the stadiums. Those at the fan parks, however, will be treated to some no-name brand beer as Anheuser-Busch is not sure they can meet demand outside of game stadiums.

Budweiser has decided not to supply its product to fan parks and fests, but is confident of meeting the demand for its brand at the stadiums, where it will be the only beer sold in terms of its position as an official sponsor of the tournament.

The World Cup used to sound fun, but I would rather watch it at home with a nice pint of real beer, than to have to drink pint after pint of imported (read:expensive) Bud. Two thumbs down to FIFA for ever thinking it was a good idea to showcase Budweiser as the beer of soccer fans, but I’m sure FIFA got a healthy check for it.

IronCupcakes: Beer

January 19th, 2010

Stout Cupcake

I know, I know, lately we seem to be more of a blog about cupcakes than beer, but when the two meet, who doesn’t want to know about it? Recently IronCupcake:Milwaukee held a contest to see who could make the best cupcake, the secret ingredient: beer! Each month, IronCupcake challenges bakers to create the best cupcake possible using a different secret ingredient.

“It’s chocolate with a home brewed Dopplebock, said Kregel, my husband is a home brewer.”

Two dozen bakers going head to head for prizes and bragging rights.

“It’s the white trash cupcake, said David Kaye explaining his creation. “It’s a potato Pabst Blue Ribbon cupcake with Tabasco ketchup frosting and sugar coated potato chips.”

The “best tasting” cupcake was made with Blue Moon at the recent competition. Next month check out bacon cupcakes…but you will have to to it on your own, unless someone makes a bacon and beer cupcake! Maybe a chocolate stout bacon cupcake…

More and more breweries these days are going green. New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins, CO is at the forefront of green brewing, utilizing solar and wind power, treating their own waste water, and donating 1% of revenue to environmental non profits. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in Chico, CA is also utilizing solar energy, treating their own water, recycling everything possible, and working on reducing emissions until they are generating 100% of their power. Head north to Hood River, OR and you will find Full Sail Brewing Company working on green initiatives, including a 4 day work week!

A Beer Cathedral?

January 6th, 2010

We have all heard of ice beer and probably most of us drank a bit too much of it when we were younger, but four Chinese citizens have really upped the ante at the Harbin Ice Sculpture Festival. They made a beer ice sculpture of Harbin’s Saint Sophia Cathedral, pouring out bottle after bottle of beer in the minus 29 degrees Fahrenheit weather.

Cuvée Series Two

January 6th, 2010

Southern Tier Brewing Company in Lakewood, NY

Happy new year, readers! I brought mine in with a bang, good company, and a nice bottle of beer down in Idaho. Southern Tier Brewing Company makes a Cuvée line of beers. The series consists of three iterations of the same beer. They are all aged in oak bourbon barrels with the second in the series being aged a few months longer than the first, and finally the first two are blended together to make the third and final release in the series. The best thing about this beer was the balance. The brewers have really figured out how to make a nice batch of beer with a good sweet/bitter balance and don’t forget the booze, either (11% ABV). Usually when drinking a beer this strong, it is either dominated by sweet flavors–a result of needing the sugars to get the alcohol content up–by just the boozy flavor.

The Cuvée Series Two is the most balanced high octane beer I think I’ve ever had. Pouring a toasted ruby walnut color, it emitted a sweet and boozy aroma with hints of roasted barley, vanilla, and espresso. It was a very thick, creamy beer that blanketed the mouth. The flavor was really the best part of this beer. It started off with a roasted caramel sweetness and booze that was well balanced with augmenting bitterness and finally finished with a bourbon aftertaste that lingered for just long enough to warm the tongue. Some of the drinkers mentioned they tasted hints of nutritional yeast, although my favorite description was from Matt Robbins, who described it as a “bitter bowl of Grapenuts and half and half.”

I found the Cuvée Series Two to be a delightful little treat of a beer. I would say the 22 oz. bottle would be great for 3-4 people to split. I’m not sure what this beer costs because I got it as a gift, but I imagine it is more on the expensive end judging from the packaging: a bottle inside a box with tasting notes and such on it. A few friends and this beer made for a delightful start to a new year!
