Alaskan Announces Pilot Series

April 19th, 2010

Alaskan Brewing Company recently announced they will be launching a new line of beer. Their “Pilot Series” will be kicked off with Alaskan Raspberry Wheat Ale on the first of May. They plan on releasing a few more beers this year under the same line including an Imperial Black IPA and another release of their Alaskan Barley Wine.

“Each new recipe is first created on our 1-barrel experimental brewhouse, perfected in our 10-barrel pilot brewhouse, then put to the test through our Rough Draft series of draft-only beers distributed in Alaska,” explains Alaskan Production Manager Dave Wilson. Those special brews that stand out to the Brew Crew and their fans in Alaska graduate to a limited release in the Alaskan Pilot Series. “Alaskan Raspberry Wheat has been one of our favorite Rough Drafts.”

The new beers will be available in 22 oz bombers and will be distributed to all ten states that currently receive Alaskan beers, so look for it in stores soon!

Alaska Produces Best Beer Drinker

March 2nd, 2010

The results are in folks. Wynkoop Brewing Company has crowned a new Beer Drinker of the Year. Congratulations to Bill Howell of Sterling, Alaska. The retired Navy officer is currently a college administrator and in 2007 designed a class called “The Art and History of Brewing.” After being weighed in and hours of judging and challenges including “beer whispering” and “the bribing of the judges,” Bill was chosen as the new Beer Drinker of the year.

Beer whispering is more akin to a poetry reading than a real tasting of beer.  The candidates were told to bring a beer and describe what the beer “whispers” to them.

This event sounds awesome regardless of whether you are a competitor or not. Perhaps some day one of the BarBEERians will make it down there as a competitor, maybe even be crowned as Beer Drinker of the Year!

Beer Review: 2009 Alaskan Smoked Porter

February 2nd, 2010

Alaskan Brewing Company in Juneau, Alaska

I remember when I was living in Portland, I had a friend who was way into beer and worked for Rogue. I figured he knew a thing or two about beer, and he did, and he was always saying the Smoked Porter from Alaskan Brewing Company was one of hes absolute favorite beers. I probably should have listened to him an tried it back then, but I’ve never been into the darker beers and the idea of smoky beer sort of turned me off. Needless to say, it was not high on my list of beers I NEEDED to try while living in the Mecca of Beer. Well, I ended up grabbing a bottle of it last week and finally got around to drinking it last night, and it was completely different than anything I’ve ever had before.

Beer Review: Alaskan Winter Ale

January 20th, 2010

Alaskan Brewing Company in Juneau, AK

In favor of full disclosure, I’ve had my fair share of Alaskan Brewing Company’s Winter Ale in the past. It used to be my go-to beer just a few winters ago for a night at a friend’s cabin or just a casual get together at a buddy’s house. But while I was on my Alaskan Winter kick, I contracted some sort of deathly stomach virus that essentially floored me and ruined my entire winter break. Ten days of the most unfun things occurred, and when such attacks happen, you think back to what may have caused such unthinkables. Sadly for me, Alaskan Winter got a bad rap and was from that point forward banished from my lifestyle. But a lot has changed since them. I’m healthy (probably). Alaskan has changed the bottle of their Winter Ale enough to trick me into buying it again (sneaky, Alaskan). And I don’t hold grudges like I used to (maybe). So I wasn’t completely against giving the Alaskan a taste again. After all, any beer made with spruce tips just sounds appetizing.
