Harnessing Hawaii’s Sun

February 3rd, 2010

The Kona Brewing Company will be the first brewery in Hawaii to go solar. By April, they hope to have their new system operational, which offset almost 60% of their energy consumption by producing an average of 900 kWh of electricity each day. Kona’s President and CEO, Mattson Davis, said it is more than smart business. Its the right thing to do.

“In the long run, the cost savings in utilizing solar power are obvious,” continued Davis. “But even more important, our system will provide improved environmental performance and reduced carbon emissions. We feel we have a responsibility to take a leadership role in establishing production methods that minimize taxing our environment. It makes economic sense and it is the right thing to do. It’s not just good business… it’s our way of life.”

I’m always excited to see new breweries working towards sustainability and green production. They also recently released the first organic beer in Hawaii, their Oceanic Organic Saison!
